What is a Pediatric Dermatologist?

A specialist that has extra training in pediatric (newborn - adolescent) skin disorders.  They treat patients in an outpatient setting and care for hospitalized patients.  They perform surgeries and laser treatments when required.   

Training in pediatric dermatology gives a greater understanding of needs for children.

Dr. Sarah Skillman

Dr. Sarah Skillman is a pediatric dermatologist who joined our practice in 2021. Dr. Skillman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and  a member of the Society of Pediatric Dermatology and of the Pediatric  Dermatology Research Alliance.

Dr. Laurie Shinn

Dr. Laurie Shinn is a pediatric dermatologist who joined our practice in 1998. She completed a Pediatric Residency as well as a Dermatology Residency at the VCU School of Medicine. Shinn continues to serve on its faculty as the Head of the Pediatric Dermatology Department.

Our pediatric dermatologists also participate in key programs at local hospitals including the VCU School of Medicine’s Vascular Anomalies Multidisciplinary Team and the Cleft & Craniofacial Team at St. Mary’s for kids. They are members of the Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Dermatology and the Society for Pediatric Dermatology.
